Over the past several years of writing software reviews for various Web sites and publications, I've discovered a handful of "must-have" utility applications. These applications have a wide range of uses, but the bottom line is that they either enhance the features of your device, make it easier to use, or make it safer. In some cases, they do all three! While these 5 programs are in no way exhaustive of the countless number of utilities available, they are the ones that I personally use and would recommend to any Windows Mobile user.

This year over 90 experts judged over 650 nominations for the Smartphone & Pocket PC magazine Best Software Awards 2006. Our judges had plenty to say about their favorite products. In this issue we are publishing their comments about the programs nominated for the Internet and Travel software categories. We will publish their comments on other software categories in future issues.

Our Board of Experts was responsible for selecting and evaluating the nominees, finalists, and winners of Smartphone & Pocket PC magazine's Best Software Awards 2006. After they were finished with this monumental task, we asked them to comment on their favorite software programs and the programs they found most interesting. Here are their responses.

We asked our Experts about their favorite software used in their professional activities. The different packages cover a wide range of categories and applications. Some are specifically designed for business and enterprise use; others are well-adapted for such purposes. We list them here in order by those the most experts recommended.

The software program used to test these Pocket PCs was Spb Benchmark, a tool for measuring Pocket PC device performance. Spb Benchmark measures various aspects of Pocket PC device productivity and speed, including processor speed, memory bus speed, screen and graphics speed, battery life, storage card read/write speed, and more.

It's imprinted in my mind like a photograph-the first time I saw that little black box on someone's belt clip. A quick pop from its holster, a few clicks on the cute black keyboard, and that well-outfitted techie sitting across from me was e-mailing away. I thought, "How simple. How effective. How do I get one of those??" And thus began my years of Blackberry Envy.

Das Programm "Spb Pocket Plus" fugt der Bedienungsoberflache des Pocket-PCs etliche Verbesserungen hinzu: Das Schlie?symbol einen Programmverwalter aufrufen, de res erlaubt, zwischen Anwendungen hin und herzuwechseln.

Das Programm "GPRS Monitor" ist in der neuen Version 2.0 erhaltlich. Die Software erlaubt es, die Datenmenge, die beim mobile Internet-Zugang per GPRS ubertragen wird, zu kontrollieren - und damit auch die entstehenden Kosten.

"Spb Quick" ist ein Begleitprogramm fur die bekannte Finanz-Software "Quicken". Spb Quick ubertragt die Quicken-Daten vom Desktop-PC auf den Pocket-PC dann fur alle Kontostande betrachten - in Tabellenform oder als Diagramm.

TEST Verzweifeln Sie an der Bildschirmtastatur des Pocket-PCs? Weil die Tasten so klein sind, dass man sie nicht mit dem Finger antippen kann? Dann sollten Sie sich das Programm "Full Screen Keyboard" ansehen - den wahr gewordenen Wunschtraum alle Stiftverachter.

Das Pocket-PC-Programm "Spb GPRS Monitor" misst die Menge der ubertragenen Daten bei GPRS-, WiFi-, CDMA- sowie GSM-Verbindungen und berechnet die dadurch entstehenden Kosten. Dabei berucksichtigt die Software die Details des fur den Anwender geltenden Mobilfunkvertrags.

Wenn ein Amerikaner im Supermarkt einen Liter Milch kauft, hat dieses Produkt bereits eine ausgeklugelte und genau kontrollierte Reise hinter sich. Die Service-Gesellschaften, die dafur in den USA zustandig sind, stehen unter hohem Konkurrenzdruck - Grund genug, als Wettbewerbsvorteil ein mobiles Logistiksystem auf Pocket-PC-Basis einzufuhren.

Hunderte von Menschen in einem Luxushotel, jeder mit einem Pocket-PC in der Hand - was ist das? Richtig, der Pocket PC Summit. Diesmal stromte alles, was in Amerika im Bereich "Windows Powered" Rang und Namen hat, nach Philadelphia. Wir waren fur Si emit dabei.

Back in the early 1990s I got my first huge and expensive cell phone. One of the "advanced" features it offered was a beep tone that would sound every minute you were using the phone, to remind you that another couple of dollars was leaving your bank account. In the years since, costs have gone down and mobile rate plans have become considerably more complex. What has not changed much is the software used in mobile phones to track your usage. In fact, every phone I've owned since that first Motorola "brick" has provided the same simple call log feature, without the ability to track use in peak and off-peak hours or to tell me to reset when a new month began.
