Spb Software House Gives Enterprises More Control Over Their Pocket PCs with Spb Kiosk 4.0
January 31st, 2007 — Spb Software House, the leading Pocket PC software developer, announces the release of Spb Kiosk 4.0, a new version of the famous enterprise-oriented application.
Pocket PC is a feature rich device with many built-in programs, games, multimedia features and so one. However, in the enterprise world most of these features are not needed and very often must be disabled. The main goal of Spb Kiosk is to lock Pocket PC to applications required by an enterprise, thus converting a generic Pocket PC device into a specialized business tool. Spb Kiosk proved to be a reliable solution used by more than 250 big companies worldwide, including Microsoft, HP, Shell, UPS and others.
New version brings Spb Kiosk to a new technology level. It uses advanced low-level techniques to work with system drivers and to intercept API calls. Now a device administrator has true control over applications running on the devices: only explicitly allowed executables can be started. This technology effectively prevents all known attacks like using remote tools, malicious programs started via memory card autorun etc. New version makes it possible to fine-tune access to device settings and even define allowed web pages in Internet Explorer.
How Spb Kiosk Works
Spb Kiosk keeps a device in kiosk mode using a number of advanced software techniques like:
- Kernel-level application block
- Replacing a touch screen driver
- Control Panel applet block
- Taskbar block
- Start menu block

A device administrator configures Spb Kiosk using desktop-side Kiosk Builder. Then Kiosk Builder produces a customized Kiosk CAB which can be deployed to as many devices as needed. After Spb Kiosk is deployed on a device, it provides kiosk mode for selected applications. Spb Kiosk can be used with most enterprise applications, both native and managed (based on .NET Compact Framework). An administrator can get unrestricted access to the device using secret unlock code. It is useful to fix a problem or to change settings on the device after Spb Kiosk has already been deployed.

Spb Kiosk Editions
Spb Kiosk Engine comes in 3 editions, each providing kiosk mode for a different type of applications.
Spb Kiosk Explorer provides kiosk mode for Pocket Internet Explorer. With Kiosk Explorer enterprises can create kiosk solutions based on web-applications.
Spb Kiosk Terminal provides kiosk mode for Terminal Services Client. Kiosk Terminal allows creating kiosks that run an application from a Windows Terminal Server.
Spb Kiosk Engine can run one or several custom Pocket PC applications in a kiosk mode and provides means to switch between them.
Pricing and Availability
Spb Kiosk is currently available in English, Czech, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish. Other language versions will be available shortly. A free trial version can be downloaded, or the full version can be purchased from www.spbsoftwarehouse.com.
Trial version generates kiosk packages with built-in time restriction. These packages provide kiosk mode on a device for 15 days. Full version costs $495 for Explorer and Terminal editions and $985 for Engine edition.
